How to Care for Your Leather.

It is expected for leather to change with time. Whether it's the firmness softening, subtle changes of shape, or a patina or polish developing from day to day use on your vegetable tanned leather wallet. Leather is a changing material which is exciting to watch transform. To keep it looking its best, here is a simple guide.

Condition your leather. Leather will dry out over time and this may lead to cracking, especially in the stressed, moving areas. Your chrome tanned leather will need this less, but still needs to be paid attention to. We recommend to condition your leather once or twice a year and to follow the instructions of your chosen conditioner.

Limit exposure to heat and sun. Prolonged exposure to heat and sun is known to change the colour of many leathers, so when not being used, it is best to store your piece away from direct sunlight, and strong heat sources.

Avoid scratches. Some leathers, such as many chrome tanned, or combination tanned leathers, are finished with a protective coating that may have light scratch resistant properties. Other leathers, such as many vegetable tanned leathers are more susceptible to scratching. If a light scratch does appear, using a leather conditioner may be required. Please follow the instructions of your chosen conditioner.

Avoid liquids. Droplets of water, and other liquids, may create visible marks on many leather types. It may also penetrate into the leather via stitch holes, causing the leather to swell. If liquids make contact with your piece, best practice is to wipe it off with a clean, dry, lint free cloth. If you believe liquid has penetrated into the leather, allow your piece to air dry in a dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Open it and set in an upright position to allow air drying for a few days. Apply a conditioner once dried.

Care for the edges of your piece. Burnished or painted, all edges on our products come with 3 layers of protection. First, a thin bees wax layer to protect edge paints and burnished edges. A second thin layer of paraffin wax to aid in a glossy finish and to also add a slipperiness to the edge, as friction can damage edge paints. A third layer of leather conditioner is applied to further help create a frictionless edge. Over time, with use, these protective layers can wear down allowing damage to edges. Once the edge no longer feels slippery, It is recommended to apply a thin layer of leather conditioner to the edge, gently massage in with a clean, lint free cloth. It is, however, important to understand that edge paint will always fail one day, proper care will only delay the edge paint breaking. We offer a charged repair service on edge paint.
